Planning a Box Cricket Net: Size, Frame and Floodlights

Box cricket has become one of the most popular evening games across Andhra Pradesh, and turf venues are opening on plots and rooftops in every city. Here is what to plan before you build — because the frame, not the net, is where most venues go wrong.

Start with the plot, not the net

The plot decides the box: its length, width and height, whether it is on the ground or a rooftop, and how exposed it is to wind. Measure the usable area and check the access for poles and materials before choosing a layout.

The netting

Box cricket nets need high-tensile, UV-treated HDPE or nylon netting on the sides and overhead. The roof net takes fewer direct hits but must stay taut across a large span.

The frame and footings

The overhead net loads the frame heavily. Pole size, spacing and footing depth must be designed for the full span. On open plots that means concrete footings; on rooftops, bolted base plates over the columns and beams.

Floodlights

Most venues make their money in the evening. Lights add weight and wind load at the top of the poles, so plan them before the frame is built — reinforcing later costs far more.

Wind and cyclones

On the coast, around Visakhapatnam, a netted box is a big sail. Designs there should allow the netting to be lowered for a severe cyclone warning while the frame stays up.
